POKEMON GO WITH UBC KINESIOLOGY
Red Fox youth get active with technology

This month Red Fox started working with students in UBC's Kinesiology program on a project to get youth outdoors and active with Pokemon Go and geocaching. Through this community project, UBC students are learning about interculturalism and the delivery of community-based recreation activities for diverse groups of people.

Over four weeks, youth participants in the Red Fox Youth Leadership program are exploring different neighbourhoods on foot with the UBC students and learning how to catch Pokemon and find hidden geocaches. Youth are getting outdoors and spending positive time with their peers around a healthy activity. They're also learning communications skills in adding their thoughts and opinions to the students' research.

Through the project, UBC students are learning about the barriers that sometimes stop at-risk youth from engaging in recreation activities that would benefit their health. The popular Pokemon Go and geocaching are great ways to get youth outside and active, and the project is increasing awareness of these barriers.

We're grateful to our partners at the UBC School of Kinesiology for this chance to learn and share knowledge and experience that will help more youth to get active. And the Red Fox youth had a great time!

RED FOX IN SURREY

New Red Fox programs featured in the Surrey Leader

In August the Surrey Leader featured a front-page story about Red Fox's new Active Play-Youth Leadership programs in Surrey, run in partnership with Surrey Schools and the Boys and Girls Clubs of South Coast BC. As well as some fantastic photos, it included reflections from Red Fox Youth Leaders on how the program has helped them. Some of our youth have gone from being too shy to introduce themselves to strangers, to having the confidence to speak about their life plans to a journalist. Seeing these changes and their growing inner strength and confidence is why we do the work we do!

Summer fun in North Vancouver

Summer is now well and truly over, but we're remembering the good times with this video of sunshine, pogo sticks and fun with new friends. Thanks to funding from United Way, hundreds of kids joined our outdoor Active Play programs this summer in North Vancouver. At the same time, teens in our youth leadership program learned how to run the show - teaching kids new skills, pushing them to set higher goals, and catching them when they fell.

SPECIAL EVENTS

With fall weather setting in, special events season is drawing to a close for the year. We had lots of fun in September running the last of our outdoor Active Play sessions for families at the North Shore Coho Salmon Festival, the Langley Country Celebration, the Still Moon Festival in Vancouver, and the BC Rivers Day Festival in Langley.

Hundreds of kids and parents learned the diablo, improved their hula skills, had fun pogoing, and connected with other families in their communities. We're already looking forward to next year!
